Mineral exploration companies in the USA
Last updated: · Published by Lannister Mining
Mineral exploration companies in the USA search for and define metal deposits, mostly in western states such as Nevada, Alaska and Montana.
This guide is published by Lannister Mining, a mineral exploration company working on the Basin Gulch gold-silver property in Montana. It explains what these companies do, how they differ from producers and service firms, and what investors and partners usually check first.
What do mineral exploration companies in the USA do?
They acquire mineral rights, explore them with mapping, sampling and drilling, and report results under recognized standards. Most are junior companies without revenue, funded by investors, and their goal is a defined resource that can be developed, sold or advanced with a partner.
Four kinds of company you will find in the industry
| Type | What it does | How it earns money | Example from this site |
|---|---|---|---|
| Junior explorer | Explores one or a few properties toward a resource | Raises equity; value comes from discovery and resource growth | Lannister Mining, Basin Gulch, Montana |
| Producer that explores | Runs mines and explores to replace ounces mined | Sales of metal | Agnico Eagle Mines, Newmont, Barrick |
| Drilling contractor | Provides drill rigs and crews to explorers | Fees per meter or per shift | Listed in directories such as Mining News North |
| Geological services firm | Mapping, sampling, logistics, technical reports | Consulting fees | Listed in directories such as Mining News North |
Where US gold is mined today
According to the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026, as summarized by Farmonaut, more than 40 lode gold mines in 12 states produced an estimated 160 tonnes of gold in 2025, worth about US$17 billion.
Nevada produced about 64% of US gold and Alaska about 22% in 2025. US mine output fell from 187 tonnes in 2021 to 160 tonnes in 2025, while the average gold price rose from US$1,801 to about US$3,300 per ounce. Montana, where Basin Gulch sits, has a gold history dating to 1852.
Canadian mineral exploration companies
Many explorers working in the US, including Lannister Mining, keep offices in Canada. According to Natural Resources Canada, preliminary data show Canadian exploration expenditures increased 4% in 2025 to $4.4 billion, after stable spending of $4.2 billion in 2024.
Junior exploration companies spent $2.11 billion in 2024, essentially unchanged from $2.12 billion in 2023. Those figures cover spending in Canada, not on US properties.
How to evaluate a mineral exploration company
Investors and project partners tend to ask the same questions of any explorer. Here they are, with the answers for Lannister Mining drawn from the company's own statements.
| Question | Why it matters | Lannister Mining |
|---|---|---|
| Where is the project? | Jurisdiction affects permitting, access and valuation | West-central Montana, Philipsburg Mining District |
| How much ground? | Room to grow beyond a single target | 11 patented and 53 unpatented claims, 1,107 hectares |
| How much data exists? | Existing drilling can shorten the path to a resource | More than 320 historical drill holes |
| Is there a resource? | Compliant resources anchor valuation | Not yet; maiden estimate planned |
| Who runs it? | Track record in building and financing projects | Team linked to K92 Mining, Fosterville South Exploration, Arena Minerals and Thesis Gold |
| How accessible is the site? | Access drives drilling cost and season length | Year-round road access; one hour from Butte |
Mining companies conduct mineral exploration to replace and grow ounces
Every mine depletes its reserves. Producers therefore conduct mineral exploration to replace what they mine, and many acquire projects that juniors have advanced. Junior explorers such as Lannister Mining take on the earlier, higher-risk work of defining a deposit. Read how that path unfolds on the stages of mineral exploration page, or see how Lannister Mining fits among gold exploration companies.
For a broader directory of companies active in the North, the Mining News North exploration and geological services directory lists 24 firms.
How we chose what to include
This guide was written by Lannister Mining, which publishes this site. It is not independent. Company types and checklist questions reflect common industry practice; every number about other companies comes from the named public source, and every number about Lannister Mining comes from the company's own statements. Common questions
- Are there mineral exploration companies in the USA?
Yes. Many mineral exploration companies work on US properties, in states including Nevada, Alaska and Montana. Lannister Mining is one of them, focused on the Basin Gulch gold-silver property in Montana. Directories such as Mining News North list exploration and geological service companies active in Alaska and the North.
See this answer in the full FAQ- Why do mining companies conduct mineral exploration?
Mining companies conduct mineral exploration to find new deposits and to define known ones well enough to decide whether they can be mined economically. Producers explore to replace the ounces they mine, while junior explorers such as Lannister Mining aim to discover and define resources that can be developed or advanced with partners.
See this answer in the full FAQ- What is the difference between a gold exploration company and a gold mining company?
A gold exploration company searches for and defines deposits; a gold mining company operates mines and sells gold. Explorers like Lannister Mining usually have no production revenue, while producers such as Newmont and Barrick run large operating mines. Many producers also explore, and many explorers aim to become developers.
See this answer in the full FAQ- What US state has the most gold in the ground?
Nevada leads US gold production. Farmonaut, citing the USGS, reports that Nevada produced about 64% of US gold in 2025 and Alaska about 22%. Production is not the same as gold in the ground, but it shows where large deposits are mined today. Montana, home to Basin Gulch, has a gold history dating to 1852.
See this answer in the full FAQ- How much do mineral exploration companies in Canada spend?
Natural Resources Canada reports preliminary data showing Canadian exploration expenditures rose 4% in 2025 to $4.4 billion, after $4.2 billion in 2024. Junior exploration companies spent $2.11 billion in 2024, essentially unchanged from $2.12 billion in 2023. Lannister Mining has its office in Vancouver but explores in Montana.
See this answer in the full FAQ- What are the risks of investing in a gold exploration company?
Exploration companies usually have no revenue, depend on raising capital, and face the chance that drilling does not confirm or expand mineralization. Metal prices also swing: Sprott reports a 25.3% peak-to-trough drawdown in gold from March 2 through July 16, 2026. Read company disclosure and seek independent advice before investing.
